He completed a brilliant degree in cello performance at the N. Paganini Conservatory in Genoa under the guidance of Nevio Zanardi. He continued his studies with Flaxsmann and Laffranchini, the well known cello sub-principal at the La Scala Theatre in Milan. In his 20s he won auditions to La Scala Youth Orchestra, the Cherubini Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti, the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana and the world famous Verbier Festival Orchestra featuring James Levine as first guest conductor. In 2001 he was invited to join as sub-principal the prestigious Arturo Toscanini Philarmonic Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel and gave performances across the world, from Paris to Tokyo, from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro.
He has won several auditions and competitions at the La Scala Theatre in Milan, the Santa Cecilia National Academy in Rome, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Carlo Felice Theatre in Genoa, the Verdi Theatre in Trieste, the Opera Theatre in Rome, the Arena di Verona Orchestra and the Mahler Orchestra.
From 1998 to 2013, he was principal cello at the “Camerata Città di Prato” Orchestra.
Since 2007, he has been cooperating as sub-principal with the Carlo Felice Theatre in Genoa and from 2019 he is a official member of the Orchestra.
Marco de Masi plays a cello (1830) attributed to Giuseppe Guadagnini.
